The Cahir Viaduct

The Cahir Viaduct is on the rail line between Limerick & Rosslare Harbour (via Waterford) and bridged the river Suir. It was built in stages between 1848 and 1906 by William Dargan, a contractor. The Chief Engineer was William Le Fanu. It has elaborate limestone detailing to the massive masonry piers and abutments. The turret-like faces to the ends of the bridge surface add decorative effect, probably complementing Cahir Castle a short distance down river.
Cahir viaduct, which was badly damaged by a de-railed cement train on 7 October 2003 , was officially re-opened by the then Minister for Transport, Mr Séamus Brennan TD, on Thursday 23 September.
